Tomato Chutney

TOMATO CHUTNEY

 The tomato chutney is basically made with tomatoes and spices.It is mainly paired with idli, dosa, cheela and many other snacks.The South Indian kitchen uses tomato  chutney as a part of breakfast and lunch.During the meal time also this chutney makes the snacks delicious .Variety of chutneys are used and prepared using bengal grams and chana dal, tomato chutney is of them.


Tomato Chutney


Tomato chutney can be prepared using number of variations like with or without onion.It can also be made using chana dal and udad dal. Red chilies are the most common used in every variations of this chutney as it makes the chutney spicy and more tasty.In our receipe we will make tomato onion chutney.

Ingredients for the chutney :

3 tomatoes(chopped)
1 onion ( chopped)
4 to 6 red chillies
1/2 tbsp udad dal
2 garlic cloves
1/2 tbsp jeera /cumin
1/2 tbsp coriander leaves for garnishing
salt as needed
2 tbsp oil

Ingredients for tempering the chutney :

1 tbsp oil
1/4 tbsp udad dal
1/4 tbsp mustard seeds / rai
1/2 tbsp asafoetida/ hing
1 red chilli
2-3 curry leaves / kadi patta

            How to make the chutney??

1. Heat a pan with 2 tbsp oil .
2. On a medium flame add udad dal and roast it until it changes to golden brown.
3. Now add 1/2 tbsp jeera/ cumin and roast it , then add  4-6 red chilies and roast it for few seconds.
4. Add 2 garlic cloves,1 finely chopped onion and salt as needed.Fry it for 2-3 minutes.
5. Add 3 chopped tomatoes as the onion gets fried
6.Saute it until it gets soft.
7. Allow it to cool then blend it.
8.Take it in a bowl.
How to do tempering? 

1.Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan ,add 1/4 tbsp udad dal and 1/4 tbsp mustard seeds/rai
2.When dal changes to golden brown add 2-3 curry leaves,1 red chilli broken.
3. Now add hing and pour this onto the bowl of chutney.
4.Now mix it well and garnish it with 1/2 tbsp of corriander leaves
5.Spicy tomato chutney is ready to serve with snacks and meals.

Notes:

1. Plain tomato chutney can be made by same recipe only skip the use of onion.
2. Sesame seeds can also be used instead of udad dal.
3. Instead of red chili , red chili powder can also be used.
